Sacramento Koi Advantage Bead Filter Blower

1) 2 Hp Blower

Built by Sacramento Koi especially for the Advantage bead filter. This blower provides a powerful stream of air inside the filter during backwashing to assist in separating the waste from the bead media. This blower is to be turned on only during the backwashing of the bead filter and never to be used while the water is running. Blower comes standard with a 4 foot, 110 volt cord along with a weather proof switch and cover plate mounted directly onto the blower.

  • 8.2 amps @110 Volts
  • 2 Year Warranty

2) Ball/Check Valve AssemblyAdvantage System Ball Check Valve

This is a ball valve and a check valve combination which is installed directly below the blower. The purpose of this assembly is to protect the blower from any chance of water leaking back into the blower and damaging it. The ball valve is to be opened and closed when operating the blower. The check valve serves as a back up incase the ball valve is not closed all the way.

Advantage Bead Filter Multiport Head Valve

3) Unionized Multiport Head

This valve allows you to select which of 6 different modes you wish the filter to perform in.

  • Filter – This is the normal running mode which filters the pond water.
  • Waste – This mode bypasses the bead filter media and sends water out the waste line. This is used when you want to perform a water change or empty the pond of water.
  • Closed – This mode is used only when bead filter is shut down.
  • Backwash – This mode causes the water in the filter to run in reverse and out the waste line. This is used to clean the filter media of any debris that was collected during the filtering process
  • Recirculation – In this mode the pond water bypasses the filter media inside of the filter and returns to the pond. This is to be used whenever you medicate the pond with a medication, such as formalin, that might kill off the beneficial bacteria in the filter.
  • Rinse – This mode sends the water through the bead filter media just as in the filter mode except the water is then directed out the waste line instead of back to the pond. This mode is to be used to give a final rinse to the filter media after backwashing the media to prevent any dirty water from returning to the pond. Additionally, the rinse mode is also used during the backwashing cycle to help agitate the bead media. When the air blower is turned on in this mode, the air is forced into the bottom of the tank. As the air erupts up from the tank bottom it causes the water inside the tank to bubble up, thereby loosening up the filter media and causing any debris trapped in the bead filter to separate from the media. This greatly reduces the amount of water required to backwash the bead filter.

Advantage Bead Filter Sight Glass

4) Sight Glass

A large 2 inch sight glass provides an easy visual aid to see when the bead filter waste water becomes clear during back-washing, indicating the filter media is clean. Held together with 4 stainless steel threaded rods and rubber gaskets which allows for easy maintenance if algae begins to form in the clear section of the sight glass.

5) Bottom Clean Out Drain

Advantage Bead Filter Drain
This valve is used to remove any debris that might accumulate at the bottom of the bead filter. This drain is also helpful in draining water from tank during winterization of filter. This valve is able to be rebuilt without being removed from filter in the event it ever began to leak. Caution: Leaving this drain open too long may allow some bead media to escape.

Ball Valve Size:

Advantage 5 Bead Filter uses a 1 inch ball valve
Advantage 10 Bead Filter uses a 1 inch ball valve
Advantage 15 Bead Filter uses an 1.5 inch ball valve

Advantage Bead Filter Clear Lids

6) Clear Top Closure Lid

Cast in high strength clear Isoplast with a slight yellow color to reduce algae buildup. This lid allows you to see inside the bead filter during the backwashing cycle to make sure the bead filter media is being cleaned properly. These lids are for use only on the Advantage bead filter.

Advantage Bead Filter Material

8) Special Bead Media

Over an 8 year period, we tested a number of bead materials to finally get the perfect bead media for the Advantage bead filter. There were 3 different criteria that we had to work with;

  1. Size – The size of the bead was critical. We found that the smaller the bead size was, the closer it will pack together under pressure which greatly increased the filter’s ability to collect even the smallest of particles. The challenge was to find a bead material that was uniform enough in size so that the smallest beads in the material would not escape through the slots in our diffuser head, while the largest beads were not too big to reduce the filtering ability we were looking for.
  2. Composition – In our testing we found, much to our surprise, that the beneficial bacteria grew much better on some materials rather than others. We found one bead material that struggled to maintain a film of bacteria on its surface even after three years. The material we settled on grows bacteria faster than any we tested.
  3. Buoyancy – We needed a material that was as buoyant as possible. We found that the lighter the media was, the tighter it would pack together inside the top of the bead filter once the tank was filled with water. Some bead filter designs use a “fluidized bed” approach to their filters. This means that their filter media is randomly floating within the filter while it is operating. This design may increases the ability of the filter to remove ammonia and nitrites from the water but greatly reduces the filter’s ability to mechanically filter out particles. Our goal with the Advantage bead filter was to provide the clearest water possible while still effectively removing all the ammonia and nitrites.

We feel we have been able to accomplish everything we set out to do with our media. The Advantage bead filter is able to mechanically filter water down to 27 microns while at the same time remove all ammonia and nitrites from the water. Note that these beads will not break down and do not need to be replaced on a regular basis. We have found that the older the beads are, the better they perform.

Advantage Bead Filter Head

9) Patented Internal Plumbing Design

One key as to why the Advantage bead filter works so well is its patented internal head design. We designed our head so that 70% of the water flow is directed straight through the filter head toward the bottom of the bead filter. This differs from most other filters that require that all the water make a sudden 90 degree turn though the head slots before entering the filter body. This design accomplishes the following:

  1. It greatly lowers the resistance or head pressure.
  2. It greatly reduces any sludge build up in the bottom of the bead filter.
  3. This causes water to follow the contour of the filter bottom and therefore evenly distributes it across the beads as it raises though the bead filter.

10) 2 Inch Plumbing Through Out

All the plumbing throughout the bead filter, from the internal plumbing to the multiport head, is 2″ schedule 40 DWV PVC rated for pressures north of 200 psi. The 2″ plumbing, coupled with the smooth internal plumbing design, gives the Advantage Bead Filter one of the lowest head pressure of any bead filter tested.
